Dennis Ritchie

Dennis Ritchie created the general purpose C programming language and with Ken Thompson he created the UNIX operating system.

The C programming language is hugely important as the syntactical parent of virtually all modern programing languages; including C++, C#, JAVA, Perl, JavaScript and PHP. C is still used in many situations to provide a powerful general purpose language to develop low level software. In addition to developing the language Dennis helps produce the original specification book for C with Brian Kernighan – generally known as ‘K&R’.

UNIX the multitasking, multi-user computer operating system is the parent on Linux and can also be traced as a direct ancestor of Solaris, OS X, and iOS. It’s still used by many corporations today as their operating system of choice.

We believe Dennis’ influence in today’s technology driven world is amazing, even though he did get some recognition we don’t think it’s enough.
